Looking for a bit of info. I'm fitting a Suzuki AP50 speedo drive. I also have a AP50 cable which is a similar length the the Rumi (I think). The problem is that the cable is 2.5mm square at the end to suite the Suzuki drive but the Rumi speedo has a smaller hole but I don't know its size. Can someone let me know what size square is the end of a Rumi cable so I can see if its feasible to file it down to suit. If I can't do this I will have to get a Rumi one and solder the end to make it bigger.

The other problem is that the fixing thread to the drive is M12 x 1mm pitch but the fixing thread on the speedo is M10 x 1mm pitch but I'm happy just to solve problem 1 to start with.

Who said that the Suzuki drive would work on the Rumi. Apart from the problem of both the cable and screw-over connection being the wrong size the gearing is all wrong too. The drive should be either 1.3:1 or 1:1 depending what size wheels you have. On this Suzuki drive the cable turns twice for each turn of the wheel. So, if you have 10 inch wheels the speedo will be registering twice the speed you are travelling. You would need a speedo that goes up to 140mph or 200 km/h.

I will have to go to plan B. When I can think of one.

Regular Speedo Cable.

Outer length 760mm.

Speedo Inner End Square across flats 1.70mm (Veglia/VDO)

Drive Inner End Square across flats 2.50mm (Veglia/VDO)

Thanks for that Ian,

Thats pretty small at one end no wonder it doesn't fit. My speedo is VDO which I think it was on my other bike too but it looks the same as a Veglia. I think I just need a standard cable to make the Suzuki drive work. If one doesn't come up for sale in the near future I'll get one made.

Regards

John.

What size are the screw-over ends on the standard cable? Is it 10mm one end and 12mm the other or are they both 10?

Hi John,

If you have a look at the Classified section of the forum, Graham (Greasy fingers) was offering sometime ago one speedo cable brand new for sale.

You can see it at the next link: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1459

Greets,
Hugo

Well, plan B is not looking good. The good news is I have removed the front wheel and the brake linings are good. The bad news is that now I have the speedo drive off I see that whilst the worm and main gear are there the driving plate with the lugs on is missing so its no good anyway. So it means trying out the Suzuki drive when I can get a cable. The hole will need to be enlarged to 15mm from 10mm to fit the spindle.

The joys of Rumi ownership!

It will need a spacer too of course. The Suzuki drive is only about 4mm thick instead of about 20. What a pain!
