Rumi substituted by Maico on the derby 150

I gave the rumi a break from its usual duties on this event yesterday, I have a 6 hour endurance event in a couple of weeks using a maicoletta, so I thought this would give me chance to get some practice miles in on one of these long wheelbase monsters = its faster - eats up the miles easier - has a...

Re: For Sale - John Dixon's Junior Gentleman Racer

A very special machine Ian, if my dodgy knees would allow me to ride it I would be on the severn bridge already, good luck with the sale.

Re: Moto Rumi Sport - 1951 (Fixing some problems)

That article looks to be aimed at 4 stroke petrol and diesel engines, but interesting all the same.

Re: Moto Rumi Sport - 1951 (Fixing some problems)

Hi Hugo, to me jpeg 2 and 3 look like classic 2 stroke nip-up, the fact that it happened when you closed down after a run would suggest that your carb is running lean on pilot, jpeg 4 is a little more worrying due to the score being in line with the ring peg = I would give the condition and security...

Re: Petrol tap advise

hi rumiroma, If you feel fuel flow is poor on your formichino it may be a good idea to remove the tap "awkward" and give it a clean/going-over, the tanks in pld rumi,s are often full of crud and sometimes rusty, I would then replace and do a flow check, I have no specific flow rates for rumi taps bu...

Re: Torque cylinder head nuts

I torque the same as I would a Lambretta (similar length 8mm studs) 18 lbs-ft 2.5kg-m 24-nm, this may not be the official figure? but it works for me. Graham

Re: Formichino carb

I would be tempted to try a standard 15mm carb (Dellorto UA15S) on the "rebuilt" Formichino before I changed anything. If the ignition is ok and the engine is in good order, it should start from the kickstarter or low speed push, and run smoothly. I am assuming Eddie,s rebuild included a crank rebui...

Of yeah!, I wouldn't run your engine until you have checked that the crank seals have not gone hard with age = buggered crankshaft.

Re: Formichino carb

Unfortunately there are no suitable "to my knowledge" modern carbs that run at the same angle as the Formichino inlet manifold. You would need to use a Scoiattolo or Turismo motorcycle manifold with something like a 17.5 PHBL Dellorto = easier starting/better performance/better fuel economy once cor...

Re: Petrol/Oil ratios

I have been looking into this a bit recently. Comments from many owners of D and LD Lambretta,s "caged big end / bushed little end" have been running their machines for many years and thousands of miles on between 4% = 25-1 and 3% = 33-1, using mostly semi and fully synthetic. I am not sure of the r...

Re: Tony Mooring

Very sad to hear this. When I got my first Rumi Tony was my first contact for parts and advice. Many hours where spent drinking tea and chatting about the worlds greatest scooter at his cottage in Gaddesden. I lost contact with Tony a bit over recent years but will remember him most fondly for his t...

Re: Iron barrels

it is quite possible that your 1960 tipo-sport came with steel cylinders, it is also possible that your scooter started life as a formichino and received a tipo upgrade during its life ?, the cylinders used for both of the above are often the style used in bicarburatore motorcycles with all the fins...

Re: Petrol/Oil ratios

I had a chat today with a respected uk rumi owner/restorer/crankshaft builder, who said I should mention that my rumi,s all run caged roller big and little end conrods, and that owners still running with old fashioned uncaged big/ bushed little end type conrods may be better off with a 25/1 two stro...

I have used exol ultima fully synthetic at 33/1 in everything two stroke I own = rumi,s / maicolett,s / velocette viceroy,s / and all my two stroke work tools for the last 5 years without any issues. it can be purchased through ebay, if you buy a big tub it is delivered for a price cheaper than most...
