10 inch wheels wanted.

Post by Orac1000 » Mon Dec 04, 2017 5:44 pm

Does anyone have any suggestions re: getting 10 inch wheels for a Formichino. The 8"-10" conversion wheels for the Lambretta LD don't seem to be available any more. There are conversion wheels (by the same company) for a Vespa model from 8" to 10" which look basically the same but have 4 bolts instead of 3 so that's not much good.

Regards

John.

I know where I can get them made but it would need to be a batch order, anyone interested?

Any idea of price? I suppose it depends on the size of the batch.

Indeed!

I only had contact with these people on another matter but while I was there they were kind enough to demonstrate what they could do.
Sufficient to say that with 50+ years in the skilled end of the engineering game I was still impressed.

If there is sufficient interest I'd be happy to make further enquiries.

By the way, I have a spare set of OEM rims with signs of cracking around the holes, I doubt I've been just unlucky, more likely it is a design/materials weakness. Even if you think yours are OK I would suggest, purely from a safety point of view, that a very critical inspection be made.

They always cracked round the holes. As you say the material was not suitable it seems some poor grade of mild steel. I would rather get some new ones if there is enough interest to make it viable failing that I would be prepared to use some old ones and get them repaired. I had to do it on my previous bike without dire consequences.

There must be quite a few that would like new wheels I would have thought.

Hi,

Sorry to be the bitter one here, but as said previously, it is not allow in the forum to organise any group purchase order to manufacture parts because bad previous experiences with members upset and me super stressed.

I know there is very good intentions and not interest in getting profit from any side, but to avoid problems, please keep it out of the forum.

However by private you guys can do whatever you want (of course)

Thanks for the understanding.

Greets,
Hugo

I know you mean well Hugo because you feel you may have to arbitrate if a project turns sour but the problem is that unless an individual takes it upon himself to get something done that isn't being done anywhere else we are all poorer as a result. You know very well that parts for Rumis are harder to find than Dodo droppings. I hope UHJ200 gets enough interest to to make it worth while to get a viable batch made I will certainly support him.

I have a few set left , new , Lambretta conversion ones, fit fine , I'm in Australia though .
That's Australia NOT Austria .
Still playing with my Boldor after 20 years , cant seem to bed in the rings on the hard chromed aluminium cylinders
just cant get the compression up . Have fitted reeds to try fill the cylinder more efficiantly , still no go .
Every 6 months or so get some time to fiddle with it .At 77 years of age I must apply more effort to get it on the road .
Oh! just remembered have front hub for Junior Gentleman and bits and pieces
Happy new year to all

I know it might sound drastic to remove the chrome from your cylinders, but if you cannot get your rumi to work i would be tempted to have the chrome removed , and have the cylinders either fitted with steel liners or re-coated with nikasil/cyramic, this would allow for a honed finish to the bore helping both ring settling and oil retention.
for 10" rims you will find the lambretta model d/ld 10"conversion rims available now and then from the likes of "scooter centre" in germany fit, they are strong but the drilling on the outer rim support holes are spaced out of line, if you use them check they fit your hubs before painting as the id of the centre hole is slightly smaller than original and may need a trim.

Thank you for your thoughts
The rims I have , have been fitted to several Lambrettas
They fit well and run true , they are also on my bolder
They also fit well and run true
I’m not a fan of cast iron sleeved aluminium barrels
As the heat is not transfered well .
I have a set of nicasil lined barrels but do wish to
Persue with the hard chrome as was used on the original
Boldore
There are ways of bending rings in and removing the glass
Like finish in a hard chrome bore
Will persue that when the weather cools a little .

I know a lot has been said about the advantages of plated chrome/nikasil over steel linered or cast iron cylinders, but I have too date "touching wood" never seized a standard rumi whatever the cylinder type, and I use my rumi,s hard, but hard chrome is just that = hard and too smooth to retain oil. requiring the use of "crazy" by modern day standards 2 stroke %.

My hard chrome barrel has many many very small what
Appear to be pinholes , not deep these in perfections will on my opinion hold oil , when I mange to use a method used by tuners in the 50s that will bed the rings in .i believe all will be well .
I agree with you about not holing a CB piston with any type of barrel , I also have never holed a piston , all it takes is
Being assured just timing and curl to sir ratio is corrrct
I don’t subscribe to using only 2% in 2 strokes as the oil ad well as lubrications also helps cool the engine .
I typically run on 5% .
I have done 5 Milan to Taranto on Lambrettas without problems .
Have also ridden an LI 1 from Sydney to Perth .
Have found once the engine heats up there is very little
Evidence of smoke,

This may be an obviously dumb question. Are you sure the piston rings you are using are cast iron? If you are using a harder material, you'll never get them to seat.

Montesa,s point regarding piston rings came up in a conversation I had last week with someone who knows about such things. I remember before nikasil/ceramic was readily available I had some cylinders modified to run on Yamaha pistons, the cylinders where re-chromed but the chrome finish on the top ring had to be removed prior to us.

Thank you Montesa and Greasy Fingers , for your continuing interest in my Rumis cylinder bedding problem.
Sorry for late reply have been away for a few days
I am using cast Iron Rings , having said that , piston rings used on Nikasil plated barrels use chromed steel rings , and Nicksil is as hard as hard chrome .
they work well and take very little if any bedding in
kind regards
Ren

honed nikasil with chromed rings is fine, smooth chrome bore with chrome plated or hard rings will lead to the problems you are having.
